Desert, Frost Heaves, and Alaska

I forgot to write about the worlds smallest desert that we saw yesterday, the Carcross Desert. So strange to see so much green around you one minute and then Poof sand and huge rolling dunes.image image This was formed during the last ice age, is a 1 square mile geological anomaly, that is not actually a desert because it is considered to humid, and is quite interesting to see.

We have be fortunate enough to have seen bear, moose, a coyote, an otter, eagles, hawks, cows, a bull, buffalo, and now finally an elk.image Whoa are they big!

We thought we were seeing steam coming off Kluane Lake, but the lake is so big you could not see the road on the other side and it is the dust being kicked up from the cars driving. Beautiful!image

We have noticed just south of Beaver Creek the trees are getting smaller  image and the frost  heaves are getting bigger. We now know exactly what frost heaves are now. Sometimes they are clearly marked with orange flags, image sometimes you can see the broken macadam, image          but sometimes those sneaky little devils just look like a little wave in the road that you see all the time and then it is a 3 foot drop when you come up on it.image If you hit them at 40 mph they will launch you to next week. The bottom of the RV will scrape, your tow vehicle will be picked up off the ground and then dropped, your personals in the cabinets will be flung around the RV leaving you to pick up and reorganize all of your stuff. I mean they rock you severely hitting them at 20 mph, but at 40 mph, you tear stuff up. If you see a small tire squeally mark on the road, image MOVE OVER or slow down quickly cuz one is gonna get cha. Make sure your seat belt is buckled or your head could hit the ceiling. Yes, we got to know frost heaves well.

image      This was one of the roads that was being  repaired                                               image            Breaker, breaker, good buddy, I think we have ourselves a convoy!

I know we went to Skagway and Skagway is Alaska, but I feel like crossing into the mainland of Alaska is really making it to Alaska.image

The US customs boarder crossing into Alaska,                                           image Well, WE DID IT! We traveled 8581 miles so far and crossed into Alaska on 6/11/10 at 4:55 pm Alaska time zone. Yes we really did it! Ahh Life Is Good!
