It’s a cloudy day today with a bit of drizzle. We decided to drive around Seward and then a bit deeper into Seward… the back roads, the dirt roads along Resurrection Bay. We saw where a an old dock was and, being low tide, you could see the prop and engine of a boat that must have sunk and rotted away. This waterfall is a redirected waterfall. It used to flow closer to town and had washed out the road and railroad tracks. So it was redirected to where it flows now. In Seward they have quite a number of murals painted on the side of buildings, all are a tribute to the history and current events of Seward. Really pretty. Lowell Point was a great find down a gravel road. Nice trails for hiking. Doesn’t this look like a great place for a critter to live? Not a bad view for the little house on stilts. People had a fun day on the beach, you just ignore the drizzle.
We continued down Nash Rd to find where we will go fishing tomorrow and to locate where the mud bog races will be held on 7/3. Then it was off to Exit Glacier. On the way we had a visitor peeking out of the flowers. He wasn’t bothered by us at all. We sat in the car and talked to the moose for quite a while. It is such a thrill to be that close, 12 feet away, from such a large wild animal.
Exit Glacier is a shrinking glacier. Since the mid 1800’s it has receded about 3 miles or so, from our estimation, from seeing signs showing where the glacier was at a particular year. We hiked up the mile long trail to get as close to the glacier as we could get. This glacier is so different than Aialik. The Aialik Glacier was rugged, mountain like and Exit Glacier looks like it would be great for skiing or sledding. After the stroll back to the visitor center, it was a little more exploring by car. Then home to the RV for a Chilli and Sourdough bread dinner and a little blog writing.
