Gentler Winds and Waters

We went back to the mouth of the Kenai River again today to observe the dip netters for salmon. Yesterday the winds were blowing extremely hard and today brings gentler winds and waters. The dip netters were having a much easier time of it today compared to yesterday. The surf was not beating them up like before.image More fish was being caughtimage image and people were having an all around great day. It is a great day to be in Alaska with the sun shining and warm temperatures. These are the type of days that are near perfection.   I could watch these dip netters for days. There are hundreds and hundreds of fisherman out here. I wish I could have a full aerial photo but this is the best I could do. The little black dots on either side of the shore, yep, dip netters, and this is only a small amount of them. This was taken during slack tide when fish aren’t running as much and fisherman aren’t fishing. More fish are caught on the in coming tide. image      image They all line up and get their space. How you don’t get caught up in the nets I don’t know. I would love to try my hand at it. But as I explained in yesterdays post, only resident Alaskans may dip net.

This guy has a great idea for a fish cleaning table, it is higher that a regular table, so you won’t hurt your back. Now if his wife could only get him to use this at home.image              What a way to make use of your surroundings.image         Men, women, and children get into the action.image     image     And the scenery, other than the fisherman, wasn’t bad either.image

After we left the river we went to Old Town Kenai where another Russian Orthodox Church is. This church is being renovated and all of the adornment was at the visitor center on display. We did not think we could go in the church but tried anyway. What a surprise, the Priest was there and trying to give the best tour that he could since there wasn’t anything  left in the church other than the grand chandelier.image image This church has a big congregation compared to the sister church in Ninilchick. This church has 45 compared to the 20 in Ninilichick. I wonder how the churches survive, but am happy they do. image

  1. It seems unfair to catch the fish with a net, why don't they use rods? It sure looks like fun.
